New IELTS Essay Topics For the Year of 2020In the first post of this series on new essay topics, we discussed that the top three IELTS essay topics have been clarified for the year of 2020. As the rest of the year progresses, the topics should be making an appearance as well, and that could not be any better.
When the latest set of IELTS essay topics were released, they signaled a return to some of the more challenging topics in the past years. Although it was only four or five years ago that students were applying these sorts of topics, it was a time when students were usually bombarded with challenging topics. New York City bombings, the war in Iraq, and terrorist attacks were all issues that students tackled and the results were predictable. In the new set of IELTS essay topics, students will have the same categories and some new ones as well. New York City bombings and terrorist attacks will have an emphasis on writing and analysis. The other categories will include religious topics. You may be familiar with this in other areas of the world, but it is a topic that has become more popular here in the United States. Subjects like religion are a great way to get your students involved in the discussion while allowing them to reflect on their own beliefs. Because religions can be so varied, this is a great way to get students to take a long look at themselves and to question where they are coming from. The topics that you assign, even if you don't want to include religious questions, are going to help to set the stage for the questions that you will likely have to answer. When you consider what is coming down the pike for the next year, you will see just how important this is. While some topics will be easier than others, there will always be topics that you will be faced with tough choices. The media will continue to look into stories of controversy, like the Japanese earthquakes and the quake in Haiti. They will also look into the controversy that is a popular in the US - immigration. That topic will probably be among the toughest in terms of the type of questions that you will be asked, so it is best to be prepared. Because of this, it is important that you do the research necessary to prepare for the questions that will likely come up each and every time that you have to write something that will get the general public talking. Of course, most things that a public figure has to say will be controversial, so you can't expect that you are safe. It is just a matter of having the tools to answer those difficult questions. When you think about it, you don't often get to take a break from reviewing yourself and thinking about where you are and what you want. That is one of the advantages of taking a class like IELTS. The result will be that you become an expert on yourself and a better you for it.
